European Language and Literature

To carry on its mandate, the Division established three Major Programs: the German Language and Literature Major, French Language and Literature Major and Spanish-Latin American Language and Literature Major. The students are expected to acquire not only language competence of each chosen major, but also understand varied western thought and multicultural values embedded in the three representative languages and literatures of Europe, which once enjoyed their dominance over the world for centuries.

  German Language and Literature Major

The Major program of German Language and Literature was established in 1978 as an academic department. The students are expected to learn the basic and advanced theories of German language and literature and German social, cultural environment. They are also expected to study its theoretical aspects and practical application. Students may obtain teaching certificates to become secondary school teachers.

  French Language and Literature Major

The Major program of French Language and Literature in an academic department was established not only to train students to learn French, but also to understand the French culture and intellectual tradition. Naturally, the program requires student to learn French to a certain level of mastery first. Freshmen and sophomores are trained to read French literature with good understanding and to communicate with others freely in French. Juniors and Seniors, equipped with the acquired language ability, move on to advanced studies of French language and literature of various periods.

Spanish-Latin American Language and Literature Major

The Major program of Spanish-Latin American Language and Literature was established to train students to acquire practical language competency and further to understand Spanish-Latin American heritage of cross-cultural nature. The major program places a particular emphasis on educating human resources of multi-linguistic ability and multi-cultural understanding, so that the graduates of the Major can contribute to facilitating linguistic and cultural exchange activities between Spain-Latin America and Korea.
