Political Science and Sociology

Initially, the Department of Political Science and Diplomacy was established in 1953, and the Department of Sociology was in 1978. In 1999, the two departments were amalgamated into the Division of Political Science and Sociology as an attempt to gain more flexibility in academic programming for students with interdisciplinary emphasis and also to achieve some efficiency of management of the programs. The primary goal of the School programs, which share many of research and practical methods, is to help students acquire the basic disciplinary knowledge and skills to function in a multidisciplinary context in the complex political communities. This Division offers two major concentrations: Political Science & Diplomacy and Sociology.

  Sociology Major

The Sociology Major program is to help students understand and analyze various human actions and social organizations. It places on the breadth of course work widely ranging from the theoretical to the applied, by taking various approaches, both quantitative and qualitative. The Major is to educate students to acquire high level competence, so as to be able adapt their functions to a rapidly changing society with sound civic culture and historical consciousness. The course offerings encompass Social Stratification, Survey Analysis and Social Statistics, Sociology of Gender, Social Organization, Social Change, Urban Studies, Information Society, Family, Environmental Problems, Industrialization and Labor, Crime and Deviance, Civil Society and Life Politics. The Major program is staffed by strong faculty specialized in Comparative Historical Sociology, Urban and Regional Studies, Work and Occupation, Environment, Political Sociology, and East Asian Studies. Also, the Major offers advanced graduate degree programs designed to prepare students for careers in research and teaching. Recent graduates of this major program have entered into education, journalism, and graduate studies in the social sciences.

  Political Science and Diplomacy Major

The Major program covers 4 subareas: Political theory and methodology, Korean politics, Comparative politics, and International relations. Today, other subareas of Urban-Local politics, Internet politics and Computer program are being added and emphasized. A sound undergraduate education in Political Science has traditionally led students into a number of career options. They include, for example, careers in government and international organization services, journalism, business; support services for politics, such as political assistants, consultants, survey analysts; diplomats, researchers, and public affairs managers. Some graduates with Bachelor's degree in the major have continued their studies at professional schools, such as peace, international relations, and public administration. Others have pursued advanced graduate studies in political science or other social sciences, leading to Master's and Ph.D. degrees. In addition, the graduates of this major are well networked with the institutes of local government and social science in the campus for the support of students training.
